Some local
people remember Circus showmen bringing their elephants to the pit to
cool off during hot weather. New Brighton once boasted a
permanent circus building on the seafront next to Wilkies Amusements.
Fairground operators and local people would also throw unwanted
goldfish into the water and this was the beginings of the Captains
Pit as a fishing lake. Wallasey Corporation eventually took
over the site as a public park which it remains to this day.
